I’m Xipher, I used to play Tribes quite a bit from 1998 to about some time during 2005.
For a number of years starting around 2001-2002 I ran a server called “MASTABLASTA” running a fairly messed around with version of Annihilation 2.0 that was tweaked for some very fun game play. At some point after the master servers were shut down I ended up turning the server off, probably around 2008 some time, and 10 years later in 2018 I put it back up just exactly like it was before, completely unchanged.
I never played Tribes in a competitive manner, I never was part of a ‘Tribe’, I just had a lot of fun for many years enjoying the game and seemingly endless creativity of the community, always new maps and mods to try and play around with.
Anyways, the ‘MASTABLASTA’ server is a nostalgia trip that I keep alive even if I don’t join it for years on end, people used to really like the server all those years ago, it was pretty active at all hours, though I’ve seen with the recent more ‘hard core’ crowd that still sticks around that the server is not enjoyed or ‘appreciated’ and that’s fine, it was the product of a 13 year old changing numbers in script files and having fun, not competing.
I’ve put up a number of other servers with the ‘T1998.net’ prefix running various mods I remember such as AAOD and Anarchy which I don’t see any other servers running, my hope is that people will drop in and experience mods that probably haven’t seen the light of day for over a decade, they’ll either relive some nostalgia or have a fresh experience. I have something around 140 different mods I can put up and would like to have at least one server scripted to run a new mod every day once I get around to setting that up, but for now I’ve just been setting up random mods or mods I remember.
